Since ancient times, the pomegranate
fruit has been revered for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral
properties. The juice of this precious fruit pomegranate, has long used as a defence against
harmful internal parasites (such as those that cause diarrhoea), as well as for
its abundant nutritional value. Pomegranate benefits have been recognised for hundreds of years in folk medicine in the Middle East and India to treat
inflammation, sore throat, and rheumatism. More recently, pomegranate health benefits have become more widely recognised as studies have shown that 100ml of pomegranate juice can have up to three times more antioxidant capacity than 100ml of red wine or 100ml of green tea. In addition to this, the delicious sweet tang of the Pomegranate provides a substantial amount of
potassium, vitmain C and niacin (a B vitamin).
Pomegranates are known as the "jewels of winter" and have
been used for centuries as decorations in the home.
However, in modern times, they are known for their
antioxidant capacity. The pomegranate plant is rich in antioxidants and is a
natural source of both Vitamin C and Iron.
The
pomegranate fruit contains an antioxidant known as polyphenol which can help to
prevent premature ageing. Recent research also suggests that the pomegranate may
have several positive effects in maintenance of a healthy heart and a healthy prostate.
As featured in The Daily Telegraph on 1st July 07, research has shown that "drinking 240mls of pomegrate juice daily could significantly slow the progress of prostate cancer". The Daily Telegraph reported that previous studies had indicated that pomegranate juice could have a beneficial effect on prostate cancer on mice, however research conducted by the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA) has indicated the benefits of pomegranate juice could extend to humans who suffer from prostate problems aswell.
Fifty men participated in the UCLA study. All of these men had undergone radiation treatment for prostate cancer and had signs that the disease was rapidly returning. The presence of prostate cancer cells is monitored by measuring levels of a chemical they produce called prostate-specific antigen (PSA).
UCLA measured how long it took for the PSA levels to double in each patient, which was an indication of how quickly the cancer was progressing.
According to UCLA, the average time it takes for PSA levels to double is fifteen months, however the average time taken for this to occur in patients who drank pomegranate juice was 54 months! Some men continued to drink pomegranate juice after the study had concluded and they continued to show suppressed PSA levels after more than three years! These men received no treatment during this time, aside from drinking pomegranate juice.
The high antioxidant levels in Pomegranates make is an ideal fruit for improving the circulatory system, prostate health and overall health and well being in general!
